Dehydration is a big problem with potted plants. Plants are in prime condition when shipped to stores from the growers, but the consumer does not always encounter the same quality in stores. Luckily, more and more ways are developed to maintain quality on the shelf. With Chrysal Aqua Sub we fight dehydration in store. Azaleas are from the family ‘Ericaceae’, which is the family of heaths or heathers, and belong to the genus ‘Rhododendron’, a group of woody plants. Recent research, done by the Hochschule Geisenheim University in collaboration with Chrysal, shows that the condition of plants in a supermarket influences the buying intention and the potential amount of sales of other products. A total of 400 people was randomly shown either a picture of a display with fresh plants, or one with withered plants, and then asked to indicate if they would buy at the shown supermarket. Interestingly enough, the intention to buy was 40% higher when shown the picture with fresh plants.

Research conducted by the research agency “Into the minds” shows that no less than 80 percent of respondents prefer plants with many flower buds and are also willing to pay more for it. In addition, the research showed that consumers prefer the plants treated with Largo® and find it important that the plant looks healthy when purchased. This meant having sufficient buds, green leaves and fresh colours. Consumers consider the pot size and the length of the stems to be less important when purchasing.
