How to avoid waste by dehydration with plants
Dehydration is a common cause for waste with plants throughout the chain. The issue occurs mostly during transport and in the shop. Also, certain kinds of plants, like spathiphyllum, azalea and hydrangea, are very sensitive to dehydration. If you use the following tips, you will avoid waste by dehydration as much as possible.
Purchase
- Always check if the plant is well hydrated.
- Look for crispy leaves and hanging plants as they are signs of dehydration.
- Buy plants that are firm and have "tension" in the leaves. This shows the plant has enough water available.
Transport
- The ideal temperature for transport for most plants is between 10 and 14 degrees Celsius. With lower temperatures you risk dropping buds and flowers. Higher temperatures can lead to dehydration.
- Make sure transportation takes as little time as possible.
- Something to keep in mind: transporting flowers and plants together can be a problem. Flowers need a much lower temperature during transport than plants.
Shop
- On arrival, provide plants with a watering system like the Chrysal Aqua Pad or Aquastick. This ensures you do not have to spend as much time watering your plants.
- Advise your customers on ideal temperatures during transport and where to place the plants at home.
