Flower of the Month

Freesia care tips

The Freesia is a versatile flower that comes in many sizes, shapes and colours. Let your imagination run wild and combine different colours and different flowers! The Freesia is originally from South Africa “Cape Lily of the Valley”, and it can be single or double flowered. It comes in white, yellow, orange, red, blue, pink and purple, but can also be bicoloured or multi-coloured. Many varieties have a lovely sweet scent which makes Freesias even more attractive.

Did you know the Freesia is a symbol of unconditional love and innocence? Traditionally someone gives white Freesias to his or her spouse after seven years of marriage, as a reminder of pure, true love. Freesias are sensitive to ethylene. Proper treatment with Chrysal AVB prevents shrinkage and bud drop and protects against too rapid aging of ethylene. Also pretreatment with Chrysal Professional 2 ensures that the flowers are longer lasting and open nicely.

Freesia care tips at the florist:

Watch out for the maturity stage when purchasing Freesia. When freesias are cut too raw, not all buttons will open. Choose flowers with buds that are beginning to open and already show some colour. Freesias are very susceptible to dehydration. This is why you should place them in clean water with a conditioning product like Chrysal Professional 2. Doing so ensures a longer shelf life and a good development of the buds. Alternatively, you could use Chrysal Professional 3 which ensures that even the smallest buds open and the consumer will be able to enjoy the Freesia even longer.
