Strelitzia care tips
Without a doubt the fascinating Strelitzia is our most exotic Flower of the Month yet. The flower, commonly known as a bird of paradise flower, is native to South Africa. Nowadays it is grown all over the world.
The largest species (Stelitzia nicolai) can grow up to 10 meters high, while most other species are between 2 to 6 meters high. The Strelitzia's flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence and emerge from a stout spathe.
Strelitzia care tips for florists
The flowers of the Strelitzia are often still enclosed in the spathe when they arrive at the florist. It can be quite hard to tease the bloom out of the bract without damaging it. A common recommendation is to submerge the blooms head down in water to loosen the tissue. After a small period of soaking, you can carefully remove the flower using your thumb to lift it out of the bract. Be very careful though, as the flowers will break easily. We also recommend using Professional 2 as this will help the flowers stay fresh a lot longer.
